When he was caught, St. Valentine was in prison and eventually executed.

Another legend suggested Valentine’s Day is based on the ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia, which was celebrated in mid-February. During Lupercalia young men would draw the names of young women from a box, and the two would be paired up as romantic partners for the duration of the festival.

Over time, Valentine’s Day became associated with romantic love, and it eventually spread throughout Europe and eventually to the United States. Today, it is celebrated in many countries around the world, with various customs and traditions.
