A simple history of Christmas

Our Happy Santa !

Originally a monk from Patara, Turkey about 280 AD. That would make him around 2300 years old. Not bad for the boss elf. An elf is a type of human in German culture that has magical powers and supernatural beauty. Indifferent towards everyday people. But with children they are committed, cheerful and merry in their toy production. Reindeer are said to pull a sleigh though the sky on Christmas eve to help Santa deliver gifts to children. The nine famous are Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, Blitzen and Rudolph. St Nicolas loved children and enjoyed giving gifts to children. he was called Sinterklaas in Dutch and became Santa Clause to us! Why is the Jolly old man from the North Pole dressed in Red? Because the colors match the brand of Coca Cola!

St Nicholas moved to the north pole. With the help of the other elves and Reindeers brings  presents to every good boy and girl on Christmas Day. It is said that if you are bad and don’t deserve any gifts you will get coal in your stocking. A bad reminder that something went wrong. It seems that St Nick first started throwing  coins down the chimney into children’s stockings, as they dried by the fire place as a way to reward the children for good behavior. In and about 1800 the Christmas Stockings gave way to the Christmas tree. Why? Because we can put more gifts under a tree than fit in any stocking. Luckily the stocking came back into the equation and small gifts, not money were put into the them, hung with care by the fireplace. Starting in Italy, children who were bad throughout the year were given a lump of coal in their stocking. Please I implore you, tell your children to be good and do good deeds so they wont have to suffer this humiliation. The largest gift given to anyone from anyone was the Statue of Liberty from France to America in 1881. Wassailing is what? Joining together and singing to toast the good health and fortune of someone in England. St Frances of Assisi converted this tradition into Christmas Caroling in modern time.

Other decorations for the tree; include popcorn strings, nuts, apples and paper shapes. And don’t forget the STAR. Sometimes replaced by an Angle that spoke to the herders in the fields. Was the Christmas Star a conjunction of planets Jupiter and Venus? Was it a Supernova? Blackhole? Don’t know but it seems the three wise men were looking for a sign in the heavens. The 12 days of Christmas came from the legend that it took the 3 kings 12 days to reach the birthplace of baby Jesus. Melchior from Persia, Jaspar from India and Balthazar from Arabia were know as the magi. They were Zoroastrianism priests bringing gifts of gold, frankincense ( an aromatic resin used in incense and perfumes ), and Myrrh ( is also an aromatic resin). You know the Christmas fruit cake we love so much. Well it has been called a plum cake  since the middle ages because raisins were called plumbs at that time. The  traditional Christmas meal in England before the turkey was a pigs head covered in mustard. I will take a good Panettone any day.

The birth of Jesus Christ is celebrated all over the world at this time. The 25th of December as denoted by the church, years after the birth. In Geek, Christ begins with the letter x, their for the word Christmas is simply Xmas. The crown of thorns that was placed on our lords head, when he was sacrificed for our salvation, is symbolized by the Christmas wreath. Colors added to the wreath have interesting meanings. Red is the blood of Christ. Gold represents the King of Kings and green everlasting life.
